Early Life and Education

Andrei Petrovich Shidlovsky was born in 1818. In 1837, he graduated from Kharkiv University with a degree in mathematics.

Academic Career

Shidlovsky pursued advanced studies at the University of Dorpat from 1838 to 1841, earning a Master of Philosophy degree. Simultaneously, he conducted extensive research at the Dorpat and Pulkovo observatories.

In 1843, he was appointed Professor of Astronomy at Kharkiv University. He established a new observatory for student training in 1845 and obtained his doctorate in mathematics and astronomy in 1846, becoming a full professor in 1848.

From 1847 to 1848, Shidlovsky conducted geodesic surveys in Kharkiv and neighboring regions. In 1856, he joined the University of Saint Vladimir as a distinguished professor.

Astronomy Career

At Saint Vladimir, Shidlovsky secured funding for a new mobile tower for the refractor telescope. He also supervised its restoration. In 1863, he became a founding member of the Astronomical Society in Heidelberg.

Shidlovsky published numerous scientific works, including his doctoral dissertation on the constant of nutation; observations of a solar eclipse; a treatise on geodetic and astronomical observations in Lapland; and a report on his expedition to determine the longitude of several Russian cities.

Later Career

Shidlovsky served as Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics from 1866 to 1868. He subsequently retired and became the director of the Bila Tserkva Gymnasium from 1870 to 1874.
