Biography of Andrei Sova
Andrei Korneevich Sova was born in the city of Odessa into a working-class family. After completing school, he graduated from the Odessa Maritime School in 1930 and was enlisted as a first-class engineer on the trade ship "Tsyurupa". He sailed to Italy, Spain, Greece, Egypt, and France. During their free time, the sailors would gather near the hold to listen to their beloved team member - the witty joker, connoisseur, and storyteller of Odessa folklore, Andrei Sova.
Acting Career
Despite mastering the maritime profession, Andrei Sova spent a long time searching for his place in life. In 1938, he graduated from the acting department of the Odessa Theater School. Over the course of 25 years, he appeared in 45 films, working with directors such as L. Lukov, V. Brown, N. Belinsky, and A. Fainzimmer. His co-stars included M. Bernes, I. Pereverzev, A. Buchma, B. Andreev, V. Merkurev, L. Sukharevskaya, E. Samoilov, N. Rumyantseva, and E. Kopelyan.
Recognition and Legacy
In 1951, after a competition, Andrei Sova was accepted into the Kiev Regional Philharmonic, and in 1959, he joined "Ukrconcert". Andrei Sova possessed the talent of transformation, skillfully embodying characters from satirical and humorous works by Ostap Vishnya, Stepan Oleynik, Vladimir Ivanovich, Pavel Glazovoy, Alexander Kovinky, Yevgeny Kravchenko, and others. He also eloquently performed poetic and prose works by T. Shevchenko, A. Pushkin, A. Dovzhenko, and V. Sosyura.
Despite facing a harsh challenge, the outstanding master spent 16 years confined to a wheelchair. He passed away in Kiev and was buried at the Baykove Cemetery. In honor of the beloved artist, the Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine and the Fund for the Development of Arts in Ukraine have been holding the Andrei Sova Variety Artists Competition since 1995, on the 13th of December, the Day of St. Andrew the First-Called.
