Nigel Davenport was born on May 23, 1928, in Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England. Raised in an academic household, he initially pursued Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Trinity College, Oxford, but later switched to English.

Early Career and Theatrical Success
Davenport's stage debut came at the Savoy Theatre, followed by his tenure with the Shakespeare Memorial Company. In the 1960s, he joined the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, establishing himself as a versatile actor.
Film and Television Breakthrough
Davenport initially played supporting roles in films and television, notably as Laurence Olivier's theatrical manager in "The Entertainer" (1960). His breakthrough came with "A Man for All Seasons" (1966), where he portrayed the Duke of Norfolk. "Mary, Queen of Scots" (1971) saw him deliver a memorable performance as Lord Bothwell.
Versatile Artiste
Throughout his career, Davenport often portrayed figures of authority and nobility, such as lords, police inspectors, and officers. In 1974, he appeared on the BBC show "Apple Cart" as King Magnus. In 2002, he played William Smethers in "Midsomer Murders."

His second marriage was to actress Maria Aitken, which produced a son, Jack, who became an actor known for his role as James Norrington in "Pirates of the Caribbean."
