Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Andrei Alexandrovich Zaporozhets, known for his bands '5'Nizza' and 'SunSay', was born in 1979 in Kharkiv, Ukraine (then part of the USSR). From a young age, he honed his vocal skills in the opera theater's chapel. Alongside music, he pursued taekwondo, but eventually chose the vocal arts, becoming a student at the Kharkiv Arts Lyceum.
Education and Medical Background
Interestingly, Zaporozhets holds a medical degree in pediatrics from the Kharkiv Medical Institute. Despite his education, he has never practiced medicine professionally, as he viewed it solely as a concession to his parents. "If someone is a poor student, they have no right to work in medicine because people's lives depend on it," he has stated.
Zen Buddhism and '5'Nizza'
Zaporozhets' interest in Zen Buddhism is evident in some of his song lyrics. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded the acclaimed band '5'Nizza' with Sergei Babkin. The group enjoyed immense popularity in Ukraine and Russia, releasing several albums before disbanding in 2007.
Post-'5'Nizza' Projects
After the demise of '5'Nizza', Zaporozhets briefly joined 'Lyuka' as a guest member. His next major project was the formation of 'SunSay', which debuted with an album that originated from unreleased '5'Nizza' material. The band performs in Russian, Ukrainian, and English, and is known for its eclectic fusion of musical genres.
World Music and Artistic Vision
Zaporozhets' distinctive voice and melodic songs have earned him recognition as one of the most unforgettable singers in contemporary music. His group's style embraces elements of funk, folk, reggae, hip-hop, and other influences, encapsulating the concept of world music. His lyrics explore universal themes of love, self-discovery, and solitude.
Personal Life and Travel
In his spare time, Zaporozhets is an avid traveler, believing in the value of a nomadic lifestyle. He hopes to one day embark on a global concert tour. He is married to Nina Marchenko and has a daughter named Sonia.
