Biography of Andris Keišs
Early Life and EducationAndris Keišs was born on November 26, 1974, in the ancient Latvian city of Jelgava. He spent his early years as a typical village boy, helping his parents gather hay and tending to the family's wagon. As a teenager, he pursued academic rowing. After graduating from secondary school, Keišs embarked on a journey to Riga, a city in turmoil during the post-Soviet era. Determined to pursue his dream of becoming an actor, he enrolled in the Latvian Academy of Culture. Known for his jovial nature and love of jokes, he often drew reprimands from his professors for his constant laughter. Nevertheless, his lighthearted humor and ability to entertain others remained enduring traits.
Theater and Film Debut
In 1996, Keišs landed his first theatrical role while still a university student. A year later, he made his film debut in the multi-part series "The Flower of One Summer." Recalling his early performances, the actor admits to their awkwardness and lack of skill, but he attributes their charm to his youthful enthusiasm. Gradually, his acting became more confident and professional, and his resume expanded with new roles on stage and screen. He joined the New Riga Theater, where he remains active to this day. Over the years, Keišs has performed in numerous Russian and world classics, including "The Twelve Chairs," "The Living Corpse," and "A Streetcar Named Desire."
Breakthrough in Film
In the early 2000s, Keišs began appearing more frequently in Latvian films. His role in the short film "Wedding" earned him the Best Actor award at the Latvian National Film Festival "The Great Kristaps." He continued to star in local productions until 2011, when he began to appear in episodic roles in Russian projects. It was not until 2015 that he landed a truly notable role. Impressed by Keišs' performance in the art-house film "Cool Coolka," director Andrey Zvyagintsev cast him in his drama "Loveless" as the lover of the main character.
International Recognition
Keišs' portrayal in "Loveless" left him in tears, having been kept unaware of the film's plot by the director. Soon after, director Slava Ross offered him the lead role of a Finnish politician in the television series "Son," alongside Maria Mironova and Juozas Budraitis. Keišs' next major film project was the 2020 melodrama "Intervention," where he played a heart surgeon who saves the life of the main character, played by Anna Chipovskaya.
Personal Life
Keišs has always desired a family, but he found his life partner relatively late. When he met his future wife, opera singer Kristīne Zadovska, he was in his early thirties, while she was five years his senior. The couple married in 2005 and welcomed twins, Adams and Magdalene, two years later. They settled in the small town of Jaunpils, where they purchased an old house with a large plot of land. Keišs enjoys gardening and spending time with his family, reading to his children and sharing stories of his childhood in Soviet Latvia. Standing at 186 cm, Keišs remains an active and devoted actor.
