Andronicus V Palaiologos: Co-Emperor of the Byzantine Empire
Andronicus V Palaiologos was the co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire with his father, John VII Palaiologos. He was the only known son of John VII and Irene Gattilusio, daughter of the archon of the island of Lesbos, Francesco Gattilusio.
Accession to Co-Emperorship
During his father's stay in Thessalonica in 1403/1404, Andronicus V Palaiologos was proclaimed co-emperor. His imperial status, however, was purely honorary, as was his father's.
Early Life and Death
Andronicus was born around 1400 and died in 1407 at the age of seven. Little is known about his early life or the circumstances surrounding his death.
Legacy
Andronicus V Palaiologos's reign as co-emperor was short-lived, but it marked a time of political instability and turmoil for the Byzantine Empire. His death, at such a young age, further weakened the empire, which was already facing challenges from external and internal forces.
