Andrus Veerpalu: Estonian Skier and Olympic Champion

Andrus Veerpalu is an Estonian skier who is known for his achievements in cross-country skiing. He has won two Olympic gold medals in the 15km classic style event and two world championship titles in both the 30km and 15km classic style races. Veerpalu specialized in long-distance events using the classic skiing technique.

Career and Achievements

Veerpalu was recognized as the best athlete in Estonia five times throughout his career, in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2006, and 2009. He participated in six consecutive Winter Olympics, starting from 1992 and ending in 2010. Throughout his career, he also won six stages of the World Cup.

In 2005, Veerpalu was honored with the prestigious Holmenkollen Medal, becoming the first Estonian to receive this recognition. He is fluent in Estonian, Finnish, and Russian. Standing at 182cm tall and weighing 73kg, Veerpalu was trained by Mati Alaver.

Retirement and Doping Controversy

On February 23, 2011, a day before the start of the 2011 World Championships, Veerpalu announced his retirement due to health issues. In April 2011, it was revealed that he was suspected of using doping. His A-sample test turned out positive for banned substances, presumably human growth hormone (HGH), which is used for faster recovery and muscle growth.

In August 2011, Veerpalu was disqualified for three years due to his use of growth hormone. This extended ban was a result of his refusal to cooperate with the FIS Anti-Doping Committee and delay in the opening of his B-sample test.

Despite the controversy surrounding the end of his career, Andrus Veerpalu will be remembered as one of Estonia's most successful cross-country skiers.
