A British Bodybuilding Champion Who Beat Arthritis with a Gluten-Free Diet

Introduction
Andy Cowling, a 51-year-old British bodybuilder, claims to have overcome a severe arthritic condition by adopting a gluten-free diet. Doctors had suspected he had rheumatoid arthritis.

Overcoming Arthritis and Embarking on Bodybuilding
Cowling's gluten-free diet reportedly alleviated his symptoms, including chronic joint pain in his knees and elbows. After overcoming arthritis, Cowling set an ambitious goal for himself: winning a regional championship in natural bodybuilding.

The Connection Between Diet and Bodybuilding
"With the dietary changes came physical changes," said Cowling. "It's affected my whole lifestyle." He described his diet as a "caveman diet" devoid of processed foods.
Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gluten Sensitivity
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disorder that affects the joints in the fingers, toes, wrists, or other parts of the body. The affected joints become swollen and stiff, and deformity and joint wear can occur over time. The condition is characterized by periods of flare-ups and remissions. It is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, leading to inflammation and tissue damage.
The Potential Role of Gluten in Arthritis
Although the exact causes of rheumatoid arthritis are unknown, there is evidence suggesting that certain foods, including gluten, may contribute to the condition. Cowling believes that eliminating carbs eased his symptoms and played a role in transforming his physique for bodybuilding competitions.
Improved Overall Health and Well-being
Cowling's new diet has also reportedly improved his overall health and disease resistance. "I was very much a different character in the way I lived my life," he said. "I suffered from allergies, including hay fever. I had mild asthma, a couple of colds or chest infections each year, and a few joint problems, such as aching knees and elbows."
"I just put it down to getting older, but now all of those things have gone," he added.
Embarking on Bodybuilding and Achieving Success
With the encouragement of friends, Cowling began training in the gym and decided to compete in competitions. Last month, he won first place in the over-50 category at the Wakefield bodybuilding championships.
"Going into the show, I had mixed emotions," Cowling admitted. "There were guys there who were in much better shape than me, but I thought I had a good chance."
Inspiring Others and Promoting Alternative Approaches
Cowling's competition victory has inspired him to pursue a career as a fitness trainer. He now shares his story to encourage others in his age group to embrace exercise, lifestyle changes, and consider alternative diets.
Omega-3s and Rheumatoid Arthritis
Research suggests that people with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from consuming foods rich in omega-3s, such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel). Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have been found to help manage the condition's symptoms.
Cowling's Message and Recommendations
"There's no reason why other people shouldn't try this, especially if they're getting something similar to what I got," Cowling said. He also advised people to always follow medical advice but added: "I'm sure there are lots of people out there in the same boat as me. I think they'd do well to do their own research."
