Paul Andrew "Andy" Richter was born on October 28, 1966, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as the second of four children to university professor Lawrence R. Richter and designer Glenda Swenson. From a young age, Andy's quick wit and improvisational skills made him a popular figure among his peers.

After graduating high school, Andy attended Columbia College Chicago, where he honed his comedic abilities. In 1989, he enrolled at the Improv Olympic acting school in Chicago, where he excelled and began writing for Jonathan Brandmeier's live show.
