The Militant Socialist Movement

In 1971, Jugnauth became President of the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM). He led the party to victory in the 1982 parliamentary elections, becoming Prime Minister for the first time. He won a second term in 1983, establishing the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) the same year.

Prime Minister and President

Jugnauth served as Prime Minister for three consecutive terms from 1982 to 1995. His tenure was marked by heightened social tensions due to the government's controversial treatment of the Muslim community. Despite this, Jugnauth was highly respected for his unwavering support of India.

In 2003, Jugnauth stepped down as Prime Minister and was succeeded by Paul Bérenger, who had served as his deputy for three years. Jugnauth became President of Mauritius, a position he held until 2012.

Sir Anerood Jugnauth's political career spanned over six decades. He held the record for the longest-serving Prime Minister of Mauritius, serving for a total of 16 years. Jugnauth's contributions to Mauritius' independence, his leadership during challenging times, and his commitment to social justice left a lasting impact on the nation.
