Anianus, Bishop of Alexandria

Early Life and Encounter with Mark

Anianus, revered as a saint, was a prominent figure in the early Christian community of Alexandria. According to Coptic legend, he was the first Christian in the city. One fateful day, as the apostle Mark disembarked from a boat in Alexandria, his sandal broke. He entrusted it to Anianus, a humble shoemaker, for repairs.

As Anianus worked on the sandal, he accidentally pierced his left hand with an awl. In pain, he exclaimed, "Ouch!" To his astonishment, Mark created a mixture of saliva and dust, applied it to the wound, and it instantly healed.

Conversion and Ordination

Awe-inspired by this miracle, Anianus invited Mark to his home and listened attentively to his teachings. Touched by the apostle's words, he and his entire household converted to Christianity. Impressed by Anianus's devotion and zeal, Mark ordained him as a bishop, later designating him as his successor.

Episcopacy

Following Mark's martyrdom around 62 AD, Anianus ascended as the Bishop of Alexandria. His leadership spanned over 17 years during which the Christian community in the region flourished. He ordained numerous priests and deacons to meet the growing needs of the church.

Later Years and Legacy

Anianus is believed to have passed away between 82 and 86 AD. His remains are now interred in Venice. As a saint, his memory is celebrated on April 25th and December 2nd. Despite the lack of extensive biographical records aside from apocryphal sources, the legacy of Anianus continues to inspire and guide Christians to this day.
