Birth and Early Life
Anjana Vasan(born January 31, 1987) is a Singaporean-British actress who rose above self-doubt stemming from her race and skin color to shine on stage and screen. Her fierce spirit of rebellion shines through in every role she plays, no matter how small.
Vasan's childhood was spent in Singapore, where she moved with her parents at the age of four. Despite an early passion for acting, she dismissed herself as a "drama club nerd" and never imagined a career on the stage. She internalized the belief that brown-skinned women were not represented on television and film, even in Tamil media, where lighter-skinned actors were usually the first choice.
Undeterred, Vasan pursued theatre studies at the National University of Singapore, but still harbored doubts about her place in the Western theatre and film scene. Following their advice, she traveled to the United Kingdom and attended the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Wales.
Theatre Career
After graduating in 2012, Vasan embarked on her stage career in the UK. She made her debut in the National Theatre Wales production of "The Radicalization of Bradley Manning," which explored the years leading up to the American soldier's leak of 250,000 classified diplomatic cables and war logs to WikiLeaks. That same year, she appeared in a minor role in "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Royal Shakespeare Company and played Loretta in "Calvary" at the Tristan Bates Theatre.
Despite an emerging film and television career, Vasan continued to hone her craft on the stages of England's prestigious theatres. In 2014, she performed in the London National Theatre's "In the Shadow of the Sun," a play based on Katherine Boo's three-year investigation of life in a Mumbai slum. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley co-star as the main characters.
