Early Years and Tennis CareerAnke Huber, a German professional tennis player, was born on December 4, 1974, in Bruchsal, Baden-Württemberg. She started playing tennis at the age of seven when her father, Edgar, introduced her to the sport. Her parents, Edgar and Gerda, owned a general store, and she has an older brother named Frank. Anke completed her schooling in 1991. On the junior level, she won the German Championships from 1986 to 1988 and the European Championships in 1989. In 1990, she reached the semifinals of the junior Wimbledon tournament. Later that year, she won the Schenectady tournament, leading up to the US Open. By the end of the 1990 season, Huber was ranked 34th in the world.
Professional Achievements
Anke Huber became the top-ranked German female tennis player after Steffi Graf retired from the sport in 1999. She achieved her highest ranking on October 14, 1996, when she became the 4th-ranked player in the world. In the same year, she finished as the runner-up at the Australian Open in the singles category. Throughout her 12-year professional career, Huber reached the finals of 23 singles matches, winning 12 of them. She also reached the semifinals in 29 tournaments and the quarterfinals in 50 tournaments. She earned a total of $4,768,292 in prize money. Huber represented Germany at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She also played in the Fed Cup from 1990 to 1998 and in 2000 and 2001, helping Germany win the final against Spain in 1995. Huber's other achievements include winning the Hopman Cup in 1995 with Boris Becker.
Retirement and Personal Life
Anke Huber retired from professional tennis in October 2001. She cited constant ankle injuries and the desire to lead a "normal life" as the reasons for her retirement. Initially, she planned to retire after her favorite tournament, the Australian Open 2002, but changed her mind after unexpectedly qualifying for the Sanex Championships in Germany. She wanted to celebrate her retirement in front of her home fans. Huber played her final match in October 2001, losing to Justine Henin with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
After retiring from tennis, Huber purchased a house in Majorca in 2001. A year later, she began working with the German Tennis Federation and became one of the organizers of the annual Porsche Tennis Grand Prix tournament in Filderstadt. In April 2005, Anke Huber gave birth to her first child, a son named Moritz Luca, with her partner Roger Wittmann. Her second child, a daughter named Laura Sophie, was born in October 2006.
