Early Life and Family
Katalin Csörnyei Donáth was born on April 6, 1987, in Budapest, Hungary. She is the youngest of three children, with two older brothers. Her father, László Donáth, is a pastor and former member of the Hungarian National Assembly for the Hungarian Socialist Party. Her paternal grandfather, Ferenc Donáth, was a lawyer and one of the three secretaries of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
Education and Career
Donáth attended the Veres Péter Secondary School in Budakeszi. She went on to study sociology at the University of Budapest and migration and ethnic studies at the University of Amsterdam. After graduating, she interned at the European Commission before returning to Hungary to work as a project manager at Menedék, an NGO supporting migrants.
Political Activism
Donáth joined the youth movement Momentum in 2016 and became the party's vice-president in June 2018. She ran as a candidate in the 2018 Hungarian parliamentary election, but the party failed to win any seats. In December 2018, she participated in mass protests against changes to labor laws, known as the "slave law," which would have drastically increased overtime hours. She was arrested during the protest.
Member of the European Parliament
Donáth was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in the 2019 European Parliament election. She was second on the Momentum list and was elected alongside Katalin Cseh. On May 29, 2019, she waived her parliamentary immunity, which protected her from prosecution in connection with the "slave law" protests.
