She gained fame for her unusually tall stature, standing at 7 feet 5 inches (2.27 meters) tall. Despite her towering height, Anna lived a relatively quiet life on her farm, grieving the loss of her two children who were unable to survive due to their large size at birth.
Early Life
Anna Haining Bates was born in 1846 in Mill Brook, New Annan, Canada. At birth, she weighed more than 8 kg and was one of thirteen children in her family. However, none of her siblings had the same extraordinary height or weight as Anna. Her growth rate was remarkable, with her height reaching 137 cm by the age of 4 and 157 cm by her sixth birthday. By the time she turned 11, Anna had already reached a height of 188 cm, and at 15 years old, she stood at 210 cm. Her height record was set at 2.27 meters, making Anna Haining Bates an icon in the world of record-breaking individuals.
Interests and Achievements
Despite her giant stature, Anna grew up as an intelligent and diligent girl. She had a passion for literature, excelled in her studies, and played the piano. She also had an interest in theater and even participated in theatrical productions, once playing the role of Lady Macbeth. Anna's life took a dangerous turn when she narrowly escaped a fire at Barnum's museum in July 1865. Her size made it challenging for her to escape through a window, and it took 18 men to hold the rope for her descent. At the time, she weighed 179 kg, although her usual weight was around 159 kg.
Marriage and Family
Anna Haining Bates met Martin Van Buren Bates, who stood at 2.20 meters, at a circus in Halifax. They immediately noticed each other, and on June 17, 1871, they were married in London. They were recognized as the world's tallest couple at the time. In 1872, Anna and Martin purchased 130 acres of land and built their own home. Considering their extraordinary height, Martin oversaw the construction, ensuring everything was of giant proportions, including doorways, ceilings, and windows. However, the back part of the house was built to regular size for the staff.
Loss and Later Life
Anna Haining Bates experienced two tragic pregnancies. Her first daughter, born in 1872, weighed over 8 kg at birth but did not survive. Her second child, born in 1879, weighed over 11 kg and lived for only 11 hours. These children were recorded as the largest officially registered babies at the time. Anna also held the unofficial record for having the largest vagina due to her height. The difficulties she faced during childbirth caused her great emotional distress. In 1879, Anna and Martin attempted to distract themselves from their grief by returning to the circus industry, but their touring career was short-lived. Eventually, they decided to leave the entertainment business.
Anna spent the rest of her life quietly, living on a farm and participating in the local Baptist community. She occasionally worked in Sunday school. On August 5, 1888, just one day before her 42nd birthday, Anna passed away from tuberculosis, with heart failure and goiter also contributing to her decline in health. Martin had to make special arrangements for a casket of the appropriate size, causing a delay in the burial. Anna Haining Bates, Martin Van Buren Bates, and their two children are buried in Mound Hill Cemetery in Seville, Ohio.
