Despite his advanced age, Hayes exhibited unwavering confidence prior to the jump. However, his family's nerves were visibly rattled. "I had the shakes," confessed his daughter, Lyn Tattersall. "I wanted a cup of hot chocolate, but I thought a stiff drink would be more appropriate!" Nonetheless, she expressed immense pride in her father and grandchildren.
