Biography of Anna Jagiellonka

Anna Jagiellonka was the daughter of Sigismund I the Old, and she became the Queen of Poland and the Grand Duchess of Lithuania in 1575. However, the true ruler during her reign was her husband, Stefan Batory. After his death in 1586, her nephew Sigismund took over the throne. This meant that Poland formally had two kings simultaneously from 1575 to 1596. During the period of interregnum, Anna did not exercise power, as the country was led by an interrex, the Primate of Poland and the Bishop of Gniezno.

Death and Burial

Anna Jagiellonka passed away at the age of 72 on September 9, 1596, in Warsaw. She was laid to rest in the chapel of Sigismund's Cathedral in Krakow.
