Anna Maria Bernini: Early Life and Career

Anna Maria Bernini was born on August 17, 1965, in Bologna, Italy. The daughter of a lawyer and politician, Giorgio Bernini, she inherited a passion for law and politics from a young age.

Bernini excelled in her studies, graduating with honors from the University of Bologna. She then pursued a career in academia, teaching Comparative Constitutional Law. She also embarked on a successful legal career, specializing in civil and administrative law. Notably, she represented renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti and his wife, Nicoletta Mantovani.

Entry into Politics

Bernini's involvement in politics began in 2008 when she joined the National Alliance party. She was subsequently elected to the Chamber of Deputies as part of the National Alliance's coalition, the People of Freedom.

In 2010, Bernini ran as the right-wing coalition's candidate for President of the Emilia-Romagna region. Although she garnered 36% of the vote, she ultimately lost to center-left candidate Vasco Errani.

Minister for European Policy

On July 27, 2011, Bernini was appointed Minister without Portfolio for Relations with the European Union in Silvio Berlusconi's fourth government. She held this position until the government's resignation on November 16, 2011.

Personal Loss and Return to Politics

Bernini suffered a personal tragedy in December 2011 when her husband, renowned gynecologist Luciano Bovicelli, passed away at the age of 76.

In February 2013, Bernini was elected to the Italian Senate. Following the split of the People of Freedom party in November of that year, she remained with Berlusconi's newly established Forza Italia party.

Senate Deputy Leader and Faction Head

In November 2013, Bernini was elected Deputy Leader of the Forza Italia faction in the Senate. On March 4, 2018, she was re-elected to the Senate from the Bologna constituency.

Bernini's political career reached new heights on March 27, 2018, when she became the leader of the Forza Italia faction in the Senate, cementing her position as a prominent figure in Italian politics.
