Anna Torv was born in 1978 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her parents, Susan and Hans Torv, come from diverse backgrounds, with her father having Estonian roots and being born in Stirling, Scotland. Anna has a younger brother named Dylan. She grew up in Hinterlands of the Gold Coast, Queensland.

After graduating from Benowa State High School in 1996, Torv enrolled in Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). She obtained a degree in the arts in 2001. Anna made her acting debut in 2002 with a small role in the television film "White Collar Blue." She then appeared in several series, including "The Secret Life of Us" and "Young Lions."
