Anna van der Breggen is a Dutch professional road cyclist who has etched her name in cycling history with her extraordinary achievements.
Early Life and Career
Anna van der Breggen was born into a family of cyclists in Zwolle, Netherlands. She began cycling at the age of seven and quickly rose through the ranks, excelling in the junior category. In 2007, she finished fifth at the Junior Women's Road Race World Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
Transition to Elite Cycling
Van der Breggen faced challenges as she transitioned into the elite category. After a serious crash during the Grote Prijs Gerrie Knetemann, she contemplated quitting the sport. However, her determination prevailed, and she emerged as one of the most versatile riders of her generation.
Grand Tour Dominance and Classics Success
Van der Breggen has excelled in both one-day classics and multi-stage races. She has won the Giro d'Italia Femminile four times, solidifying her status as a Grand Tour champion. In the classics, she has triumphed seven times at La Flèche Wallonne, twice at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and once each at the Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race, Strade Bianche, and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
World Championships Glory
Van der Breggen's accomplishments extend to the world stage. She became World Champion in both the time trial and road race at the 2018 and 2020 UCI Road World Championships. This feat had only been achieved by Jeannie Longo in 1995.
Olympic Champion
In 2016, van der Breggen's dream became a reality when she won the gold medal in the women's road race at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Beyond cycling, Anna van der Breggen is known for her humble and religious upbringing. She is a member of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Liberated). She holds a degree in nursing and enjoys playing the piano, drawing, and knitting in her spare time.
Retirement and Future
In 2020, van der Breggen announced her intention to retire from the sport at the end of the 2021 season. Post-retirement, she plans to become a sports director for the Boels-Dolmans team.
