Saint Anna Wang
St. Anna Wang was a martyr of the Roman Catholic Church and the daughter of St. Lucia Wang Wang.
Boxer Rebellion
During the late 19th century, China experienced significant anti-Christian sentiment. This reached its peak during the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901), which resulted in the widespread persecution of Christians throughout the country. Over 30,000 Christians were killed during this uprising.
Anna Wang's Martyrdom
On July 21, 1900, the Boxer rebels arrested Catholics in the village of Wei, where Anna Wang resided. One of the leaders of the village's Catholic community, Joseph Wang Yuimei, was executed immediately. Anna Wang, along with her mother, Lucia Wang Wang, and her brother, Andrew Wang Tianqing, were also apprehended. The following day, they were given an ultimatum: renounce their Christian faith and live or face execution. Anna Wang remained steadfast in her faith and was beheaded by the rebels that same day.
Recognition and Legacy
Anna Wang was beatified by Pope Pius XII on April 17, 1955, alongside the French missionary Fr. Leon Mangin. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000, as part of a group of 120 Chinese martyrs. Her feast day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on July 9.
