Annagrazia Calabria: A Rising Star in Italian Politics

Early Life and Family

Annagrazia Calabria was born in New York City on May 6, 1982. She is the granddaughter of Carlo di Calabria, a former head of the American bank Merrill Lynch in Europe. Her parents are Luigi Calabria, a former CFO of Leonardo-Finmeccanica, and Cynthia Alfonsi, the regional coordinator of the "Azzurro Donna" movement in Lazio.

Education and Legal Career

In 2006, Calabria earned a law degree from LUISS University and subsequently worked at the Rome office of the law firm Allen & Overy. From 2008 to 2014, she served as secretary of the scientific committee of the Italy-USA Foundation. Since 2009, she has been a junior fellow at the Aspen Institute.

Early Political Involvement

Calabria first became politically involved at a young age. In 2001, at the age of 19, she participated in municipal elections in Rome on the "Roma Nostra" list, supporting Antonio Tajani's bid for mayor. She went on to join the Forza Italia Youth movement, leading its youth policy committee and serving as regional coordinator in Lazio.

Election to the Chamber of Deputies

In 2008, Calabria was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, becoming the youngest member of the new parliament. She was elected from the Lazio 1 constituency and took the seat vacated by Giovanni Alemanno, who had been elected mayor of Rome.

Member of Parliament

In parliament, Calabria served as a member of the People of Freedom (Popolo della Libertà) caucus. She joined the Transnational Radical Party in 2009 and was elected to its national committee in 2014. Calabria was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2013, representing the Piedmont 1 constituency as part of Silvio Berlusconi's center-right coalition.

Youth Movement Leadership

In 2010, Calabria was appointed national coordinator of the "Young Italy" movement, becoming its leader alongside Giorgia Meloni. Her appointment sparked some controversy within the People of Freedom party, with some members criticizing her lack of experience.

Recent Positions

Since 2015, Calabria has served on the First Commission (on Constitutional Affairs, Presidency of the Council, and Internal Affairs) in the Chamber of Deputies. She is known to be a close friend of politician Maria Rosaria Rossi.
