Anne Cox Chambers, an American media mogul, is the majority shareholder of the private media empire 'Cox Enterprises', which includes newspapers, television and radio companies, cable channels, and more. As of September 2014, her net worth was reported at $16.1 billion by Forbes. She ranked 28th on the list of wealthiest individuals in the United States and 53rd on the list of the world's richest people.
Early Life and Education
Anne Cox Chambers was born on December 1, 1919, in Dayton, Ohio. Her father, James M. Cox, was a newspaper publisher who aimed for the presidency as the Democratic candidate in 1920. Anne was born from James' second marriage to Margaretta Parker Blair. She studied at Finch College in New York.
Career and Accomplishments
Anne Cox Chambers owns and manages her father's assets in Cox Enterprises. At the age of 33, she became a co-founder of the family company alongside her sister, Barbara Cox Anthony, who passed away on May 28, 2007. Anne was previously married to Louis G. Johnson, with whom she had two children, Katherine Anne and Margaretta. Her relationship with her husband ended in divorce. In 1955, she married Robert William Chambers, with whom she had a son, James Cox Chambers, an actor, dancer, and choreographer.
In 1974, after the death of her brother James M. Cox, known as Jim Jr., Anne and Barbara received a controlling stake in the family company. That same year, Chambers became the chairman of 'Atlanta Newspapers'. Her sister chaired 'Dayton Newspapers', while Barbara's husband, Garner Anthony, became the administrative leader at Cox Enterprises.
In 1983, Chambers received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Oglethorpe University. In 1988, Barbara's son, James Cox Kennedy, became the chairman and CEO of Cox Enterprises.
Chambers also had a successful career in business and politics. She was appointed as the ambassador to Belgium by President Jimmy Carter and held the position from 1977 to 1981. She served as the chairman of 'Coca-Cola' in the 1980s and was the first woman in Atlanta to hold the position of director at Fulton National Bank. She also became the first woman in Atlanta to be appointed to the Chamber of Commerce.
Currently, Chambers serves as the chairman of 'Atlanta Newspapers' and a director at 'Cox Enterprises', one of the largest diversified media companies in the United States. Cox Enterprises owns the largest cable television operator in the country, 'Cox Communications', as well as newspaper publishers including 'The Atlanta Journal-Constitution' and 'The Palm Beach Post'. They also own television and radio broadcasting companies and 'Manheim Auctions', an auction firm specializing in automobiles. Additionally, Cox Enterprises holds a stake in internet companies such as 'Autotrader', the world's largest online retailer of cars.

In 2005, a wing of the expanded High Museum of Art in Atlanta was named in her honor for her unwavering support of the museum. Her involvement with the museum began in 1965 when she helped establish the 'Forward Arts Foundation', which raised funds for the museum. In the early 1980s, Chambers also served as the honorary chairman of the fundraising group for the construction of a building designed by architect Richard Meier. The 12,500 square meter building became the High Museum of Art in 1983.
