Billy Joe "Red" McCombs was born in 1927 in a small town in Texas, approximately 75 miles east of Lubbock. He was the eldest of four children and showed early signs of intelligence and ambition. Despite his father being an auto mechanic, it wasn't until later in life that Billy Joe would become involved in the automotive business, which would eventually become one of his main sources of success.

In 1943, Billy Joe's family relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he attended Southwestern University in Georgetown. It was there that he played football for the university team. After his time at university, Billy Joe served in the army for two years before being honorably discharged.

Following his military service, Billy Joe decided to pursue further education and enrolled at The University of Texas. He studied law and business and graduated with a prestigious bachelor's degree in science and arts. It was during this time that he discovered his knack for selling cars. While visiting a friend in Corpus Christi, Billy Joe attempted to sell a few cars and found success.
