Anne Kirkbride was born in Oldham, Lancashire, in a family of Jack Kirkbride, a former artist for the 'Oldham Evening Chronicle' publication. She first caught the attention of 'Coronation Street' casting directors through the project 'Another Sunday and Sweet F.A.' where she played in the adaptation of Jack Rosenthal's play on 'Granada Television'. She made her debut as Deirdre Barlow in November 1972 and gradually became one of the main characters in the show. In 1974, Kirkbride signed a permanent contract, marking the beginning of her popularity as Deirdre Barlow.

Personal Life and Struggles

In 1992, Anne Kirkbride married David Beckett, a former actor who played Deirdre Barlow's love interest in the show. They had a strong marriage that lasted for 23 years until Anne's death. Despite being a married couple on screen, they did not have any children as Anne never felt a strong desire to have them. In 1993, Anne was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which caused her to experience depression. However, she fully recovered a year later.
