Biography of Queen Anne Stuart

Queen of England from 1702 to 1707 and the last of the Stuart dynasty. Known for her family virtues and friendly demeanor, Queen Anne was a woman of limited intellect - slow-witted, indecisive, and not fond of rigorous activities, heavily relying on her advisors.

Early Life

Anne Stuart, born on February 6, 1685, was the daughter of James II and Mary of Modena. She married George, son of King Frederick III of Denmark, in 1683. As a Tory queen, she aligned herself with the party's beliefs and remained devoted to the Anglican faith.

Reign and Influences

Initially, the Duke of Marlborough and his wife Sarah had significant influence over Queen Anne's decisions. The victorious War of the Spanish Succession, which spanned her entire reign, brought immense joy to English patriots due to the brilliant victories achieved by the Duke. However, despite their successful policies, Queen Anne was burdened by the dominance of the Whigs.

Change in Advisors

Over time, the Queen's affections for her first Lady of the Bedchamber cooled. She was replaced by the young Abigail Masham, who influenced the Queen to remove several zealous Whigs from the ministry and hand over government leadership to Lord Bolingbroke. In 1713, they successfully negotiated a highly advantageous peace with France, resulting in England acquiring Gibraltar, Minorca, and French territories in America including Nova Scotia, Hudson Bay lands, Newfoundland, and St. Kitts.

Union of England and Scotland

In 1707, another significant event took place - the union of England and Scotland into a single nation known as Great Britain. The House of Commons gained 45 Scottish deputies, and the House of Lords added 16 Scottish peers.

Legacy

Queen Anne had 13 children, but all of them died in infancy. With her death, the Stuart dynasty, which had ruled England for over a hundred years, came to an end.
