Lithuanian Artist and Professor Alfonsas Kmeliauskas
Alfonsas Kmeliauskas was a renowned Lithuanian artist who excelled in painting, sculpture, and graphic design. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the prestigious National Prize of Lithuania, and left an indelible mark on the Lithuanian art scene.
Early Life and Education
Kmeliauskas was born in 1932. He began his artistic education in the early 1940s at elementary and secondary schools in Butrėmonys and Jieznas. In 1949, he enrolled in the Kaunas Secondary School of Arts, where he graduated with a gold medal in 1951. He then pursued painting at the Lithuanian State Institute of Arts in Vilnius (now Vilnius Academy of Arts), completing his studies in 1957.
Artistic Journey
After graduating, Kmeliauskas actively participated in exhibitions from 1957 onwards. His early artistic expressions were primarily in the realm of painting, where he created portraits of prominent Lithuanian figures from academia, music, theater, and the Catholic Church.
Exclusion and Return
In 1960, Kmeliauskas faced a setback when he was expelled from the Union of Artists of Lithuania for creating a sculpture of Saint Christopher for St. Nicholas Church in Vilnius. Due to this expulsion, he resorted to crafting tombstones as a means of earning a living.
However, in 1974, Kmeliauskas's fortunes shifted when he won the gold medal in an ex libris competition organized by the San Vito al Tagliamento Library in Italy. This recognition led to his inclusion in the Graphics Section of the Union of Artists of Lithuania in 1975.
Academic Career
Kmeliauskas's artistic talent extended beyond his own creations. In 1977, he joined the faculty of the Vilnius Academy of Arts as an instructor of plastic anatomy and later drawing. By 1994, he had attained the rank of professor.
Versatile Artistry
Kmeliauskas was known for his diverse artistic output, encompassing easel and monumental painting, graphic art, and sculpture. He created decorative sculptures, tombstones, prints, and ex libris. His ex libris, in particular, garnered international recognition, with exhibitions in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany, and other countries.
Monumental Works
Kmeliauskas's artistic contributions extended to large-scale projects as well. He designed frescoes for various prominent establishments, including the Littera bookstore in Vilnius, the rector's hall of Vilnius University, and the Jesuit Gymnasium in Vilnius.
Sculptural Masterpieces
Beyond his artistic creations, Kmeliauskas also left a legacy in the form of monumental sculptures. He created the altar in the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Klaipėda, the monument on the grave of poet Jonas Aistis, and the memorial to Lithuanian conscripts who fell in Afghanistan.
Recognition and Legacy
Kmeliauskas received numerous awards and honors for his exceptional artistry. In 1994, he was bestowed with the National Prize of Lithuania for his frescoes in the Rainiai Chapel. His works continue to inspire and enrich the Lithuanian art world, leaving an enduring mark on the nation's cultural landscape.
