Anthony Downs: A Life-Saving Bond
A Rare and Devastating DiagnosisFifteen-year-old Anthony Downs was born with a rare genetic disease called Malignant Infantile Osteopetrosis (MIO), also known as "marble bone disease." This condition causes bones to become extremely brittle and fracture easily, and it significantly increases the risk of bone marrow failure. Unless Anthony received a stem cell transplant, his prognosis was grim.
A Lifeline from Unknowns
Within 24 hours of Anthony's diagnosis, a suitable donor was found. The transplant, performed a month later, saved his life. The anonymous donor had been identified through the New York Blood Center, a public cord blood registry.
The Search for the Savior
Years later, Anthony's mother, Tracy, began to think about the person who had saved her son's life. She reached out to Patty Boske, a mother she found on the genealogy website Ancestry DNA.
A Serendipitous Discovery
As Tracy looked at the photos of Patty's son, Sam, she realized that he resembled Anthony. She contacted Patty and confirmed that Sam's cord blood had been donated to the New York Blood Center.
