Anthony James Barr: American Programmer and Inventor
Anthony James Barr is an American programmer and inventor known for his significant contributions to the field of data analysis and software development. Born in the United States, Barr began his career in the 1960s, where he first started exploring the concept of a universal data control system for report generation and creation.

The SAS System
In 1966, Barr founded the 'SAS System' project, which resulted in the creation of the 'Statistical Analysis System (SAS).' This software system was widely utilized for scientific, governmental, industrial, and educational purposes. The initial concept of the program was introduced in 1966 in Athens, Georgia. Prior to working on the 'Statistical Analysis System (SAS),' Barr had already developed a special modeling language for variance analysis, drawing inspiration from the work of statistician Maurice Kendall. During his time as a student at North Carolina State University from 1962 to 1963, he implemented his ideas on an assembler for IBM 1410. Some of Barr's ideas were influenced by A. Grandage, the author of similar applications for IBM 650. As the program progressed, Barr expanded its functionality significantly. The insights gained during this period were later instrumental in the development of the 'Formatted File System.'
Expansion and Collaboration
By 1968, Barr had assembled a team of talented individuals to work on the 'Statistical Analysis System (SAS).' He designed and implemented a programming language, data management system, report generation modules, and other crucial system components. In 1976, Barr, along with James H. Goodnight, John P. Sall, and Jane T. Helwig, founded the 'SAS Institute, Inc.' Barr held the majority of the company's shares, accounting for 40% ownership. However, in 1979, he sold his shares.
Automated Classification of Medical Entities
Another notable project of Barr's was the development of the 'Automated Classification of Medical Entities,' a complex software package created for the National Center for Health Statistics. This program analyzed the causes of death reported in medical records and calculated the "primary" cause. Later, Barr's system was incorporated into a larger medical project.
Barr-Mullin, Inc.
In 1971, together with Sandy Mullin, Barr developed, patented, and implemented the first computerized equipment system for optimizing the use of wood in furniture production. The device analyzed labeled materials, calculated the optimal placement of necessary components, and optimized the cutting process. In 1973, the two colleagues established the 'Barr-Mullin, Inc.' corporation.
Continued Innovations
Throughout his career, Barr continued to push the boundaries of technology and develop innovative solutions for various industries. His work on the 'Formatted File System' led him to collaborate with the National Military Command Center, where he significantly improved and rewrote existing developments for the joint chiefs of staff. Barr successfully refined three main components of the system: data retrieval, sorting, and updating modules. Additionally, he created a groundbreaking universal lexical analyzer for all intermediate languages and message processing used within the system.
