Early Life and Education
Andrew E. "Andy" Rubin was born in Chappaqua, New York, to a psychologist father who founded a direct marketing company. Rubin graduated from Horace Greeley High School in 1981 and earned a Bachelor's degree in computer science from Utica College in Utica, New York.
Engineering and Development
From 1986 to 1989, Rubin worked as a robotics engineer at Carl Zeiss AG. While at Apple in 1989, he earned the nickname "Android" for his fascination with robots, which eventually became the official name of the Android operating system.
In 1992, Rubin joined General Magic, where he developed the object-oriented Magic Cap operating system. After Magic Cap failed, he co-founded Artemis Research with Steve Perlman, which later became WebTV and was acquired by Microsoft.
Danger Inc. and Android
In 1999, Rubin co-founded Danger Inc. specializing in mobile devices and software. The T-Mobile Sidekick was one of their most popular products. Rubin left Danger Inc. in 2003 and co-founded Android Inc., which was acquired by Google in 2005.
Google's Android Development
As Senior Vice President at Google, Rubin oversaw the development of the Android operating system. He left Google's mobile and digital content division in 2013 and became head of Google's robotics division in December 2013.
Departure from Google and Sexual Misconduct Allegations
In October 2014, Rubin left Google to launch Playground Global, an incubator for hardware startups. While Google initially praised his departure, reports later surfaced that he was asked to resign by Google CEO Larry Page due to unsubstantiated sexual misconduct claims, which Rubin denied.
Playground Global and Essential Products
Playground Global provides funding, mentorship, and resources to hardware startup companies, particularly those developing artificial intelligence systems. Rubin later co-founded Essential Products, which released the Android-based Essential Phone on November 9, 2015.
Personal Life and Controversy
Rubin was married to Rie Rubin, owner of Voyageur du Temps bakery and cafe in Los Altos, California. The bakery closed in September 2018. Rubin has denied accusations of sexual misconduct, calling them "false" and part of a "smear campaign" launched by his ex-wife during their divorce and child custody proceedings. According to Rie Rubin, her former husband has a net worth of $350 million, up from $10 million in 2009.
