Antiochus VI, the Boy King of Seleucid Empire
Antiochus VI Dionysus was the underage ruler of the Seleucid Empire, born to Alexander I Balas and Cleopatra Thea.
Early Life and Captivity
Prior to becoming king, Antiochus resided with the Arab chieftain Emalkue. Historians speculate that Emalkue obtained the young prince from Alexander's custody during his escape to Arabia.
Nominal Reign under Diodotus Tryphon
In 145 BC, Diodotus Tryphon, an ambitious general, proclaimed Antiochus as king to challenge the rule of Demetrius II Nicator. However, Antiochus's reign was merely nominal, as Tryphon retained actual power.
Usurpation and Death
In 142 BC, Tryphon deposed Antiochus and assumed full control of the empire. In 138 BC, an announcement declared that Antiochus was suffering from an illness that required surgery. It is widely believed that this medical procedure was a ruse to conceal his assassination at the hands of Tryphon.
