Biography of Antoine Berman
Antoine Berman was a French translator, renowned historian, and theorist of translation. He served as the head of the program at the International College of Philosophy. Berman's main interests were linked to the romantic stage of literary translation, and his theory of the art of translation was developed under the influence of philosophical hermeneutics. His approach was fundamentally anti-ethnocentric, considering translation as a pursuit of the "self" towards the "other," emphasizing the art of differentiation rather than similarity.
Berman primarily translated literature from the 20th century, working with English, Spanish, Portuguese, and German languages. Some of his notable works include translations of novels by R. Arlt, R. Piglia, M. Scorza, A. Roa Bastos, P. Hertling, and G. Vidal. Additionally, he delivered lectures on the art of translation, including F. Schleiermacher's works. Berman's works have been translated into English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese. In France, the Antoine Berman Association "Tasks of the Translator" continues to operate, preserving and promoting his legacy.
