Jacques de Crussol: A Huguenot Leader in the French Wars of Religion

Early Life and Family

Jacques de Crussol was born into a noble family in France. His father, Charles de Crussol, was the Viscount of Uzès, and his mother was Jeanne-Ricard de Genouillac.

Military Career

In 1562, Crussol became Lieutenant-General of Dauphiné, Languedoc, and Provence during the French Wars of Religion. He was also elected as the chief of the Huguenots in the Midi region.

During the first religious war, Crussol established a Calvinist government in Nîmes. In 1563, he arrested Baron des Adrets, a prominent Huguenot leader.

Conversion to Catholicism

Despite his previous support for the Huguenots, Crussol received an order from the King to convert to Catholicism on the eve of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. He complied with the King's request and subsequently fought against his former co-religionists.

Later Years

Crussol was appointed to govern Dauphiné, Provence, and Languedoc to combat the remaining Huguenots. He died during the siege of La Rochelle.

Marriage

On April 10, 1556, Crussol married Louise de Clermont-Tallart.
