Louis-Gabriel-Ambroise de Bonald was a prominent French publicist who played a significant role in the political and intellectual landscape of the 19th century.

Early Influences and Conversion

Born into a noble family in 1754, Bonald initially embraced the Enlightenment ideals of the Encyclopedists. However, at the turn of the century, he underwent a profound conversion to Catholicism and became a staunch proponent of French monarchy.

Journalist and Legitimist Advocate

In 1821, Bonald founded the newspaper "L'Étoile," later renamed "Gazette de France." Through this platform, he vigorously defended the principles of legitimacy—the restoration of the House of Bourbon to the French throne. His unwavering support for the monarchy amidst political turmoil led to numerous legal challenges.

Election to Parliament and Political Career

In 1846, Bonald was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. On February 24, 1848, he unsuccessfully advocated for a referendum on the restoration of the monarchy. After the February Revolution that overthrew King Louis-Philippe, Bonald withdrew from active politics.

Religious Life and Legacy
