Biography of Antoine François Marmontel

Antoine François Marmontel was a French pianist, composer, music educator, and musicologist. He was the nephew of the famous 18th-century French writer Jean-François Marmontel. Antoine François Marmontel was born on July 16, 1816, in Clermont-Ferrand, the administrative center of the Auvergne region in central France.

Education and Career

Marmontel became a student at the Paris Conservatoire in 1827. He studied piano with Pierre Zimmerman, harmony with Victor Dourlen, fugue with Jacques Fromental Halévy, and composition with Jean-François Le Sueur. Marmontel won first prizes in music theory and piano performance.

In 1837, he was appointed as an assistant professor of music theory at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1848, Marmontel succeeded Zimmerman as a professor of piano, surpassing his former teacher Charles-Valentin Alkan, a brilliant and virtuosic pianist. This had unfortunate consequences for Alkan, as he suffered a serious nervous breakdown and ended his performing career. However, Marmontel's memories of his colleagues in his book "Les pianistes célèbres" became a valuable source for Alkan's biographers.

Teaching and Contributions

Marmontel achieved great fame as a creative and effective pedagogue. He had many famous students, including Georges Bizet, Vincent d'Indy, Théodore Dubois, Dominique Ducharme, Gustave Gagnon, Ernest Guiraud, Émile Paladilhe, Edward MacDowell, Gabriel Pierné, Louis Diémer, Francis Planté, Antoine Simon, Arthur Letondal, and Claude Debussy.

His career was marked by numerous pedagogical works, including more than 200 compositions, as well as nocturnes, romances, études, and other pieces. His most significant published works include "L'Art de déchiffrer" (The Art of Sight Reading), which also includes "Cent études faciles" (One Hundred Easy Studies); a collection of 24 études called "École élémentaire de mécanisme et de style"; and "L'Art de déchiffrer à quatre mains" (The Art of Sight Reading for Four Hands) in 1847. In 1887, he published "Enseignement progressif et rationnel du piano" (Progressive and Rational Piano Teaching).

Musicological Works

Marmontel's musicological works are considered some of the best sources of knowledge about the history of the piano and outstanding pianists, especially those of the 19th century. These include "Symphonistes et virtuoses" (Symphonists and Virtuosos) published in 1880, "Les pianistes célèbres" (Famous Pianists) in 1878, "Virtuoses contemporains" (Contemporary Virtuosos) in 1882, "Éléments d'esthétique musicale et considérations sur le beau dans les arts" (Elements of Musical Aesthetics and Considerations on Beauty in the Arts) in 1884, and "Histoire du piano et de ses origines" (History of the Piano and Its Origins) in 1885.

Throughout his life, Marmontel hosted weekly gatherings of pianists from all over Europe at his home, where playing something like a piano trio was considered a special honor.

Legacy

Marmontel's son, composer Antonin Emil Louis Corbaz Marmontel (1850-1907), also became a professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire and composed numerous piano pieces. Marmontel was a close friend of the older composer George Onslow, who he dedicated a chapter to in his book "Symphonistes et virtuoses."

Antoine François Marmontel passed away on January 16, 1898, in Paris at the age of 81.
