French Author and Academician

Étienne Aignan was a distinguished French writer and esteemed member of the prestigious Académie française. His intellectual pursuits extended beyond literature, as he also held a professorship in history.

Political Engagement and Persecution

During the turbulent period of the Hundred Days in 1815, Aignan actively participated in political affairs, serving in the Chamber of Deputies. However, his political views did not align with the prevailing Restoration government, and he found himself expressing his dissent through his writings in liberal newspapers.

Arrest and Literary Collaboration

In collaboration with novelist and journalist Étienne de Jouy, Aignan embarked on a project that resulted in their imprisonment. Their "Biographie des contemporains" (1822), a biographical work, stirred controversy and drew the ire of authorities. As a consequence, Aignan and Jouy were incarcerated at the prison of Sainte-Pélagie.

Literary Solace in Captivity

During their imprisonment, Aignan and Jouy found solace in their shared love of literature. Together, they composed "Les hermites en prison, ou consolations de Sainte-Pélagie" (1823), a literary opus that reflected their experiences and provided a measure of comfort in their confinement.
