Early Education and Training

Mahammadtaghi Jafarov was born on July 15, 1936, in Ohchuoglu village of the Amasia district in the Armenian SSR. He completed secondary education in his hometown and continued to pursue his passion for agriculture by enrolling at the Yerevan Agricultural College from 1950 to 1954.

Doctoral Studies and Faculty Membership

In 1954, Jafarov joined the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute's Agronomy Faculty. Upon completing his undergraduate studies, he began his academic career at the institute, holding various positions, including agronomist, assistant, associate professor, and professor. In 1983, he became the institute's rector, a role he held until 1989.

Academic Leadership

Following his tenure as rector, Jafarov continued his work at the institute as a professor in the Department of Soil Science. In 1989, he was appointed head of the department. In 1995, he returned to his previous position as the institute's rector.

Research Contributions

Soil Science and Agriculture

Jafarov's research focused on phosphate issues in Azerbaijan's agriculture, particularly the nutrient balance in the republic's major agricultural zones. His contributions include:

- Developing a system for differentiated soil fertilization in Azerbaijan.

- Establishing guidelines for the creation and use of large-scale soil maps.

- Defining principles for establishing a national soil monitoring system in Azerbaijan.

Recognition and Legacy

Academic Achievements

Jafarov defended his doctoral dissertation in 1973, and his candidate dissertation in 1964. He became a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in 1989 and a full member in 2001.

Authorship and Guidance

Jafarov has published 157 scientific works and has mentored numerous students, overseeing the completion of 15 candidate dissertations and 2 doctoral dissertations.
