Antoinette Bourignon: Mystic and Sect Leader
Early Life and Religious AwakeningBorn with a severe cleft lip and palate, Antoinette Bourignon's early existence was marked by uncertainty over her own survival. However, a successful surgery fully corrected her birth defect. From a tender age, she displayed an ardent interest in religion, reportedly lecturing her parents on the subject at the age of five.
Journey into Mysticism and Rebellion
Influenced by mystical literature, Bourignon fled her parental home to escape an arranged marriage. Upon her parents' death, she inherited a substantial fortune, which she used to establish a hospital in Lille in 1662.
Spread of the Bourignonist Sect
In 1667, Bourignon's visions and teachings attracted a large following. Fearful of persecution, she fled in 1671 to the island of Nordstrand, where she established a printing press to disseminate her writings.
Persecution and Exile
Condemned again, Bourignon relocated with her disciple, pastor Pierre Poiret, to eastern France. There, she founded another hospital and continued to spread her ideas.
Legacy and Influence
Antoinette Bourignon passed away in 1680. Her writings, which were composed with captivating eloquence, were published by Poiret in Amsterdam (1679-1689) in 25 volumes. Bourignon's teachings continue to influence spiritual movements to this day.
