Sir Donald Gosling: A Legend of Sailing and an Advocate for Naval Charities

Early Life and Naval Career

Sir Donald Gosling's lifelong passion for sailing began at a tender age. At nine, his mother took him to Portsmouth's Round Tower, where they witnessed the comings and goings of warships. From that moment, Gosling's heart belonged to the sea, and joining the Royal Navy seemed an inevitable path.

After active service during the latter part of World War II, Gosling found himself out of the Navy due to postwar downsizing. He retrained as a surveyor, but his desire to return to water remained unfulfilled. With modest savings, he acquired his first "yacht": a 10-foot clinker boat.

Business and Success

A successful business partnership with entrepreneur Ronald Hobson led to the pair owning over ten car parks in the late 1950s. Flush with newfound wealth, Gosling purchased a beautiful yacht, Elizabeth Gertrude, in 1953. In 1960, he built his first custom-made yacht, the 75-foot Silver Goose.

The "Leander G" and Yacht Ownership

In 1990, yacht builder Peter Insull invited Gosling to visit a German shipyard transitioning from warships to yachts. There, the "sea lover" spotted a 2,000-ton yacht under construction and purchased it, ensuring that modifications were made to his specifications. Launched in 1993, the Leander G, named after the Leander-class light cruiser on which Gosling once served, remains one of the world's top superyachts, hosting both private and royal charter guests.

Naval Philanthropy

Appointed Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom in 2012, Gosling has also dedicated much of his life to supporting naval-related charities, including the Royal Navy.

In 1992, Gosling established The Gosling Foundation. The foundation has become renowned for its support of the preservation of HMS Victory, which has been transformed into a museum in Portsmouth.
