Early Life and Education

The Austrian pianist and music teacher Julius Epstein was born in 1832 in Bratislava, then part of the Austrian Empire. He began his musical studies at an early age, studying piano with the renowned Karl Czerny and music theory under Simon Sechter.

Concert Career

In 1850, Epstein embarked on a concert tour through Germany and Italy, gaining recognition for his exceptional artistry. Subsequently, he was appointed court pianist in Stockholm.

Moscow Conservatory and Friendship with Tchaikovsky

From 1866 to 1869, Epstein served as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, where he befriended and collaborated with the renowned Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky dedicated his Waltz-Caprice, Op. 4, to Epstein in 1868, a testament to their mutual admiration.

Return to Vienna and Teaching Career

In 1869, Epstein returned to Vienna and retired from his performance career. He devoted himself to teaching at the Vienna Conservatory until 1901, where he nurtured the talents of notable musicians such as Alexander von Zemlinsky, Paul Pabst, Rubin Goldmark, Karl Weigl, and Fritz Steinbach.

Connection to Johannes Brahms

During his time in Vienna, Epstein became a close associate of Johannes Brahms, whom he first met during a concert tour in 1855. Their friendship deepened over the years, and in 1903, Epstein published a memoir about Brahms.

Legacy and Publications

Epstein's editorial work included preparing the publication of Franz Schubert's piano compositions. His legacy as a teacher and musician continues to inspire aspiring musicians worldwide.
