Early Life and Education

Paul Klamerroth was born in Moscow in 1851. He began his education in Moscow before moving to Gotha, where he furthered his studies at the local grammar school. In 1882, Klamerroth enrolled at the Technical University of Charlottenburg to pursue architecture. However, after a year, he switched to the Berlin Academy of Arts, where he studied under renowned artists such as Karl Gustav Hellquist.

Klamerroth made his debut at the Academy Exhibition in 1887. From 1890 to 1892, he worked on a series of officer portraits in Meiningen. Subsequently, he settled in Leipzig, where he remained for most of his life, apart from brief travels to Paris, the Netherlands, and Egypt.

The Leipzig School and International Exhibitions

In 1893, Klamerroth established the Leipzig School of Painting and Drawing for Women. From 1897 onwards, he became a regular participant in major exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, and Munich. In 1913, Gotha hosted a solo exhibition featuring 78 of Klamerroth's works.

Klamerroth primarily worked with watercolor and pastel, gaining recognition as a skilled portraitist. Among the notable individuals he portrayed were the chemist Wilhelm Ostwald, the musicians Arthur Nikisch, Fritz Steinbach, Karl Reinecke, and Ferdinand Pfohl, as well as the prominent lawyer Ludwig Ebermayer. Klamerroth also provided private art lessons, with notable students including Fritz Stuckenberg.
