Biography of Anton Räderscheidt

Anton Räderscheidt was a German artist and representative of the New Objectivity art movement. He was born in 1892 in Cologne, Germany.

Education and Early Career

In 1910, Räderscheidt enrolled in the School of Applied Arts in Cologne. From 1911 to 1914, he continued his studies at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf, where he also received training as a drawing teacher in a special seminar.

World War I and Teaching

During World War I, Räderscheidt was mobilized into the army and served as a participant in the war. After the war, from 1917 to 1919, he taught at a real school in Cologne-Mülheim. Following his teaching experience, he worked as a freelance artist.

The Stupid Group and Exhibitions

In 1919, Räderscheidt became one of the founders and members of the Cologne art group called "The Stupid Group." In 1925, he participated in the exhibition "New Objectivity" at the Museum of Fine Arts in Mannheim.

Escape from Nazi Persecution and Exhibitions in France

In 1934-35, Räderscheidt moved to Berlin. However, due to persecution by the Nazis, he fled to France in 1936. In 1937, he participated in the exhibition "Salon des Surindependans" and had a solo exhibition at the Billet-Worm Gallery. In 1938, he took part in the exhibition "Free German Art," organized by the "Free Union of Artists" (FKB) in Paris as a protest against the Nazi propaganda exhibition of "Degenerate Art."

Internment and Escape to Switzerland

From 1939 to 1942, Räderscheidt was interned in Toulon, and his Paris studio was confiscated by the Nazis. In 1942, he managed to escape to Switzerland.

Later Years and Exhibitions

In 1947, Räderscheidt relocated to Paris, but in 1949, he returned to Cologne. In 1952, a retrospective of his works was held at the Cologne Union of Artists. He also participated in the III German Art Exhibition in Dresden in 1953. In 1960, Räderscheidt exhibited his works at the German Union of Artists in the Museum of Fine Arts in Baden-Baden. In 1962, his works were showcased at the Cologne Union of Artists and the Lempertz Art House.
