Early Life and Career
Michael "Micha" Walterwas born on July 12, 1954, in Berchtesgaden, West Germany. He began luge racing at a young age in Königssee. As a teenager, he joined the RC Berchtesgaden sports club, where he honed his skills. He won several German youth championships in both singles and doubles luge between 1970 and 1973. In 1972, at the age of 17, Walter won his first international medal, a silver at the European Junior Championships. He also served as an alternate for the West German luge team at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.
Olympic Career
Walter competed in two Winter Olympics. At the 1976 Games in Innsbruck, he finished sixth in the men's singles luge event. However, at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, he achieved a career highlight by winning the bronze medal in the same discipline.
World and European Championships
In addition to his Olympic success, Walter won three medals at World Championships, including a silver in singles (1978) and two golds (singles in 1977 and doubles in 1979). He also triumphed at the European Championships in 1977, capturing the title in Königssee.
World Cup Success
Walter enjoyed a successful World Cup career, highlighted by the overall title in the 1977/78 season. He finished ahead of the legendary Italian luger Paul Hildgartner.
National Championships
Walter won the German National Championships twice (1976 and 1980) and placed second on two occasions (1974 and 1975).
Post-Retirement
After retiring from competitive luge racing following the 1980 Olympics, Walter became a youth coach in Königssee. He later pursued a career as an electrician and worked as a civil servant for the German Army.
