Early Life and Musical Education
Peter Franz Ignaz von Carulli was a German composer born to opera singers Antonio Maria Gaetano Carulli and Elisabeth Böhm. After his parents separated in 1786, he moved to Berlin with his mother. In 1791, he became court composer and music director to Count Oborzky.
Musical Success in Berlin and Vienna
In 1793, Carulli's cantata "Contimar und Zora" and opera "Die Geisterbeschwörung" premiered successfully in Berlin. Supported by Count Oborzky, he traveled to Vienna to study with Antonio Salieri and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger. There, he met and befriended Ludwig van Beethoven. His oratorio "Gioas, Rè di Giuda" was performed in Vienna in 1795.
Service to Count Lobkowicz
In 1796, Carulli entered the service of Count Lobkowicz, a renowned patron of the arts. He married Franziska Kraft, daughter of cellist Anton Kraft and sister of Nicolaus Kraft. Their son, Paul Carulli, became a key figure in the development of the Franzensbad spa.
Musical Output
During his time in Lobkowicz's service, Carulli composed two more operas: "Anton" (1796) and "Das Geheimnis" (1804). However, his most notable works were for wind instruments, including clarinet concertos, clarinet quartets, and divertimenti and partitas for wind and string ensembles.
