Ukrainian Composer and Conductor
Serhiy Mykolaovych Profitilov was a renowned Ukrainian composer, conductor, and pedagogue. Born on December 6, 1903, in Sambor (now in Ukraine), Profitilov was the son of renowned musicologist Fedir M. Kolessa.
Musical Education and Training
Profitilov's musical education began early, as he studied at the Higher Musical Institute named after M.V. Lysenko in Lviv from 1913-1914 and 1917-1924. In 1928, he graduated from the Prague Conservatory before completing the School of Higher Mastery in 1931, where he studied under Vítězslav Novák.
Return to Lviv
Returning to Lviv, Profitilov taught at the Higher Musical Institute named after M.V. Lysenko from 1931. After Galicia became part of the USSR in 1940, he joined the Lviv Conservatory named after M.V. Lysenko as a professor from 1957. He served as the conservatory's rector from 1953 to 1965.
Conductorship
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Profitilov was an accomplished conductor. He led the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra from 1940 to 1953 and the Lviv Opera and Ballet Theater from 1944 to 1947. He also served as the artistic director and principal conductor of the "Trembita" Choir from 1946 to 1948.
Compositions
Profitilov's compositions encompassed a wide range of genres, including symphonies, choral works, and chamber pieces. His music was heavily influenced by Ukrainian folk melodies. Notably, his composition "Oi u Poli Krynychenka" based on a Ukrainian folk song, gained widespread recognition.
Legacy and Passing
Serhiy Mykolaovych Profitilov passed away on June 8, 2006, leaving behind a rich musical legacy. He was laid to rest in Lviv's Lychakiv Cemetery, a place of honor for notable Ukrainians. His contributions to Ukrainian music and culture continue to be remembered and celebrated.
