Biography of Antonio (Tony) Pappano

Antonio Pappano is a British conductor and pianist of Italian descent. He was born on December 30, 1959, in Epping, England. His parents immigrated to the UK from the small Italian town of Castelfranco in Miscano in 1958, with only 10 pounds in their pockets. Pappano's father, Pasquale Pappano, was a singing teacher and taught his son as well.

At the age of 13, Antonio and his family moved to Connecticut, United States. Despite his musical talents, Pappano did not pursue formal music education and instead received private lessons in vocal and piano training, as well as composition.

Pappano's musical development took off when he moved to America and began studying with Norma Verrilli, who introduced him to a wide range of music from classical composers like Bach, Mozart, Chopin, and Brahms, to early music and American songs.

While juggling various jobs, including accompanying concerts and playing piano in a bar, Pappano gained practical experience and developed an eclectic taste in music. He started his professional career as an accompanist, then became an assistant to renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim in Bayreuth, where he participated in productions of Wagner's operas.

Pappano continued to work in Oslo, Barcelona, and Frankfurt before making his debut as an opera conductor in 1987 with Puccini's "La Bohème" at the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet. In 1990, he was appointed the musical director of the theater.

Throughout his career, Pappano has conducted in prestigious opera houses and orchestras worldwide, including Covent Garden, English National Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Théâtre du Châtelet, and Berlin Staatsoper. He has collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

In 1999, Pappano became the musical director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, a position he still holds. He also took the helm of the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in 2005. Pappano has recorded extensively for EMI Classics.

In January 2012, Antonio Pappano was knighted for his services to music. He is married to American vocal coach Pamela Bullock.
