Blessed Anuarite Nengapeta

Early Life and Education

Clementine Anuarite Nengapeta was born in the Congo in 1939. She attended a boarding school run by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth (Nazarennes) in Bafwabaka. After completing her education in 1957, she entered the Nazarennes' novitiate and took her perpetual vows in 1959.

Religious Life and Service

In 1960, Nengapeta graduated as a teacher and began catechizing at a school in Jamaa Takatifu. A spiritual diary found in 1977 reveals her deep understanding of monastic vows as a sacrificial service to God and others.

Capture and Martyrdom

On November 29, 1964, Nengapeta and 36 other nuns were abducted by Simba rebels and taken to Isiro. When she refused to marry the rebel leader, she was subjected to humiliation and torture. As she lay dying, Nengapeta forgave her attackers.

Beatification

On August 15, 1985, Pope John Paul II declared Nengapeta a Blessed during his pilgrimage to the Congo. Her feast day is celebrated in the Catholic Church on November 30.
