Saint Zenaida: The Martyr of Dimitrias
Saint Zenaida was an early Christian saint revered as a martyr in the Orthodox Church.
Early Life and Ancestry
Zenaida and her sister, Philonyla, were believed to be either cousins or relatives of the Apostle Paul. Hailing from Tarsus, they abandoned their home after hearing Paul's preaching and settled in a cave near the city of Dimitrias.
Healing and Ministry
Renowned for her medical skills, Zenaida practiced as a physician, offering her services to those in need without charge. Through her compassionate acts, she spread the Gospel, bringing solace and healing to the afflicted.
Martyrdom and Legacy
During one of the persecutions of Christians, Zenaida and her sister faced their ultimate test. Refusing to renounce their faith, they were subjected to a cruel punishment by the pagans: being stoned to death. Their martyrdom is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on October 11th (Julian calendar).
