Ararat Gomtsyan: Armenian Political and State Figure
Ararat Dvinovich Gomtsyan (February 2, 1948, Gyumri) is an Armenian political and state figure, who holds a PhD in Economics (1979).
Education and Academic Career
Gomtsyan graduated from Yerevan State University in Economics (1966-1971). He further pursued his education at the Institute of Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (1977) and the Moscow Higher Party Academy (1990).
Early Life and Military Service
Gomtsyan served in the Soviet Army from 1971 to 1972.Political Career
Gomtsyan began his political career in 1982. From 1986 to 1990, he served as the First Secretary of the District Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia in the earthquake zone. From 1990 to 1996, he was the Chairman of the Republican Association of Housing and Public Utilities under the Government of Armenia.
From 1996 to 1999, Gomtsyan became the First Governor of Shirak Marz. He was elected to the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR from 1990 to 1995 and again in 1995, serving on the Standing Commission on State and Legal Affairs. He is a member of the "Republic" party.
Government Positions
Gomtsyan held various government positions, including:Chief of the Operative Management of the Government of Armenia (1999-2000)
Advisor to the Prime Minister of Armenia (2000-2001)
Head of the Republican Headquarters for Winter Preparation (2001-2002)
Diplomatic Service
Since 2002, Gomtsyan has served as the Consul General of Armenia in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation.
Honors and Awards
Gomtsyan is a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RAEN) (2002) and has received numerous orders, medals, and government awards.
