A Life of Devotion: Bishop Longin's Journey

Early Life and Family

Mykhailo Chorney, ordained Bishop Longin, was born into an orphaned existence on August 19th, 1965, in the rural village of Petrashëvka, Ukraine. Despite the adversity he faced, Mykhailo persevered, graduating from secondary school in 1978. In 1984, he married Liilia, embracing the holy union of matrimony. Their lives were blessed with three children: Vladimir (1987), Michael (1989), and Maria (1990).

Ecclesiastical Beginnings

Bishop Longin's spiritual path began in 1990 when he was ordained as a deacon and priest by Bishop Anthony of Chernivtsi and Bukovina. He served as rector of several parishes in the Chernivtsi Diocese, including St. Paraskevi Church in Podvalnoe, Nativity of the Theotokos Church in Boyany, and St. Paraskevi Church in Bancheny. In 1991, he commenced his theological education at the New-Nyamets Spiritual Seminary in Moldova.

Monastic Life and Charity

In 1992, Bishop Longin established a children's home after adopting a six-month-old girl suffering from AIDS. Recognizing the need for spiritual guidance alongside physical care, he was tonsured into the monastic life in 1996, receiving the name Longin after the martyred soldier. With the blessing of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UPC), he dedicated himself to the construction of the Holy Ascension Men's Monastery in Bancheny.

Building and Supporting

Parallel to monastery construction, Bishop Longin established an orphanage, initially located within the Holy Ascension Monastery. A new orphanage complex was built in Molnytsa, consecrated in 2002 by Metropolitan Vladimir of Kyiv. His educational pursuits continued with enrollment in the Chernivtsi Orthodox Theological Institute, where he graduated in 2007.

Recognition and Accolades

In 2008, Bishop Longin was appointed abbot of the Holy Ascension Men's Monastery and elevated to the rank of archimandrite. He played a pivotal role in the construction of the Holy Trinity Cathedral within the monastery, consecrated by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow in 2011. For his extraordinary adoption and care of over 400 orphaned children with disabilities, Bishop Longin was awarded the esteemed title of Hero of Ukraine in December 2008.

Episcopal Ordination and Service

On May 8th, 2012, the Holy Synod of the UPC elected Bishop Longin as Bishop of Bancheny, vicar of the Chernivtsi Diocese. His consecration ceremony took place on May 22nd, 2012, at the Panteleimon Women's Monastery in Fеоfania, Kyiv. As Bishop of Bancheny, he continued his tireless efforts in supporting orphans and guiding his flock.

In the Midst of Conflict

In September 2014, Bishop Longin made an impassioned plea for peace during the Bukovina conflict. He urged unity and implored the community to reject the violence that was claiming lives.

Elevation and Resistance

On August 17th, 2017, Bishop Longin was elevated to the rank of archbishop by Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv and All Ukraine. In response to the so-called unification Council, he returned the invitation to Patriarch Bartholomew and denounced the event as a "satanic gathering of the wicked."
